Are unpadded snowboard bags ok for plane travel?

I need to get a bag for my snowboard as I’m planning on flying overseas. I know that fully padded bags are the way to go, especially since the luggage just gets thrown around. But money is tight and I’m wondering if it’ll be okay to just get an unpadded one for 3 times cheaper and just stuff it with towels and clothes?

Of course I’m worried about my precious board but like I said if it’d be the same effect stuffing the bag with clothes, maybe even with more padding than the padded bags would have, would it give the same amount of protection?

You have the right idea – get a cheap one and pad it with clothes and the like – it also saves you on your main bag baggage allowance XD It will protect your board just as well and they’re pretty tough things anyway.

Just watch it on regulations – some airlines are really picky and say only the board/skis themselves can be in the bag on ’special baggage’ no extra stuff inside it… just check with the airlines, but if you can go for the cheap unpadded bag and stuff it :D

well if you care about your board you should definitely go with a padded bag but i would not just stuff it with clothes because it can still chip very easily. try checking out a few sites before you buy one here are a few.
    Evogear.com
    CCS.com
    Backcountryoutlet.com
all of them are good websites and you will probably find yourself a good bag there and if worse comes to worst go to Dicks Sporting Goods

I always travel with my board in an unpadded bag. I usually just give a quick wrap in something .

Don’t worry so much about your “precious” board. A little banging around isn’t going to do any serious damage to it. I love my boards as much as anyone, but when I don’t baby them, I feel good at the end of the year to see them destroyed, every scratch and dig reminds me of the fun I had.

I pack all my snowboarding gear in my unpadded bag.
With all the underlayers, jacket, sweats etc. It is well padded all around, no problems yet

Wrap-it with popcorn and newspaper! You could add a layer of paper-mache [with little ears and whiskers].

I would take off the bindings, put them in my suitcase, then get some balck foam plumbing insulation from a store like Home Depot and pad the rails, and wrap it in a towel. I’ve done that and my board was fine. Stuff the bindings in between your clothes. Are you going to the southern hemisphere? where can you snowbord in May?
