Some sports are nice and easy to get involved with. With these sports, you don’t need to do too much in terms of preparation. You simply turn up and start playing. But the approach is very different with many winter sports.
Snowboarding is an excellent example of an activity that does require a bit more by way of organisation and preparation. It’s clear that you need to put some thought into this sport before taking part. If you’re a complete novice then you can be forgiven for being confused.
There are plenty of shops selling snowboards and accessories. As a result, you may be wondering about which accessories and gear you really need. Is it all necessary? As with so many things in life, the answer is that some pieces of equipment are more vital than others. There can be instances here of style being seen as more important than functionality.
So what do you really need? Well, for starters, you’ll need to make sure that you have a snowboard. You’ll want one that is suited to your size and ability level. There’s no point in opting for a professional snowboard if you won’t be able to control it on the slopes. A better approach is to seek a board that’s right for you.
You’ll also need some layers of warm clothing. Ideally, they’ll be flexible enough to allow you to move easily, but they should also provide a good level of protection. You’ll certainly want a hat, gloves, ski jacket and snowboard pants. Don’t forget about snowboard goggles too. The glare of the sun can be quite surprising once you’re on the mountain.
Snowboard boots are also really important and you’ll need to make sure that they are firmly fitted to your board. The way to do this is by using snowboard bindings. The safest option is usually to buy a board and bindings at the same time. By doing so, you shouldn’t have to worry about compatibility issues.
Of course, there are extra items that you can buy. But the truth is that these basics will enable you to enjoy the sport from the outset. As you gain more experience, you may want to look at upgrading your board and buying additional accessories.

There is much debate as to where snowboarding originated. But whether snowboarding descended from skiing or skateboarding, snowboarding is a legitimate sport that requires a descent on a snowy slope using a snowboard. It is difficult to really point out who started this fun-filled sport, but one thing is for sure: somebody will always have the idea of sliding down a snowy slope on a board or sled.
The growing recognition of snowboarding around the world is evidenced by its establishment as a sports discipline in 1995. As such, snowboarding has been included in events in Winter Olympics and Winter X-games. It even has a US Open tournament of its own. The growth of snowboarding as a sport is undeniable as more and more people get hooked on it.
Now that you are among the countless ones who want to try out the fun and excitement that only snowboarding can give, it is high time that you learn the basics of making your very first downhill ride on a snowboard. So how do you begin?
First, you need to procure the necessary snowboarding equipment. You need to have the right snowboarding gear, clothing, boots, and of course, snowboard. Make sure that your snowboard is the right size for you; not too expansive or narrow.
If you already have the necessary equipment, you can start learning the basics of riding your snowboard. Here are a few important things to remember as you start to find your destiny in snowboarding.
Keep in mind that snowboarding is similar to snow skiing. The body movements that enable you to control and stabilize your snowboard are the same as the movements in skiing. Therefore, if you are already a skilled skier, there will be fewer problems for you ahead. A skier will have easier time than a skateboard thrasher to learn snowboarding.
Always be in a relaxed position. Like any sport, snowboarding requires a calm and hang-loose mindset. Most accidents and injuries in snowboarding happen when one is in tensed position. As you mount your snowboard, keep your knees bent; a stiff stance will only make you absorb impacts between your snowboard and snow.
Do not start learning how to snowboard by immediately riding down the snowy slope during the first time. Instead, begin with snowboarding across a small patch of snow. Get a feel for the sport. Be conscious of your snowboard and your movement. Are you comfortable in your getup and equipment?
Try steering the snowboard over the small area you are in. Practice making turns, learn the finer points of toe-side turns, which means turning by lifting your heels up while pressing your toes to the snowboard; or heel-side turns, which make use of your heels for your turning. Once you have mastered the basics of balancing and steering your snowboard, you can move to a bigger patch of snow, but do not try a long and steep slope just yet.
Now that you have actually moved on your snowboard, you have to learn how to stop your snowboard. Stopping a snowboard basically requires making more turns until you find your self going for an uphill position. An uphill direction will certainly slow your snowboard down until you are in a complete stop.
After learning all the basic riding movements, you can now try a full-scale ride down a longer and steeper snow slope. Good luck!

The overall surface of a snowboard should be kept smooth and able to easily prevent debris from collecting on the board itself. The smooth surface makes it much easier to control the board while in play. The better your control of the board, the easier is it to get the most of your speed and ease of turning. Obviously, the less effort you have to exert in order to control the board, the better your endurance and the longer you can actually engage in the sport in a short period of time. This can be very important when you choose to engage in snowboard competitions.
As far as the board itself, a good quality snowboard wax helps keep your board in top condition, extending the life of the board itself. Over time, a board that is not maintained properly with a good wax job will develop a rough texture and more stress will be placed on the board as it is used. The wax will help you to get the most out of your board, by extending the life of the board.
When it comes to applying the snowboard wax, make sure you have a dry room that is well ventilated to do the job. As with many products, the fumes can make you dizzy. Make sure that you have laid some sort of a cloth, such as an old sheet or a dropcloth, so the excess wax will have something to drip onto. You also will need to have a couple of blocks or bricks to prop the board onto, so that it is not resting on the ground. A cheap pair of household gloves will also help to protect your hands while applying the wax.
Snowboard wax usually comes in the form of a bar, similar to a bar of soap. Before you begin to apply the wax, heat it up by using an old iron. If you do not have a waxing iron, you can use a conventional iron that is free of rust and ideally with a non-stick surface. The idea is to have the wax liquefied enough to spread, but not so hot that it will begin to smoke.
After dripping the wax onto your board, spread a coat evenly across the surface, using a plastic scraper, similar to the types that are used to scrape frost and ice from the windshield of a car. The layer does not have to be a thick coating, but it is important that it be as even as you can manage. Once the wax is evenly spread, allow it to cool. While it is cooling, the wax will begin to seep into the texture of the board.
Once the wax is cooled, use another scraper to gently remove any excess wax. Don’t use the scraper to dig down into the board. What you want is a very clear veneer on the board with no spots that have any wax buildup. For a final step, take an abrasive pad and polish the surface to further smooth out the layer of wax.
There is some difference of opinion on how often you should wax your snowboard. A good rule of thumb is to apply a new coat of snowboard wax after every three uses. You can adjust this based on your own experience, and how much of a beating your wax job takes during your routine use of the board. Also remember that a board which has been in storage for some time should have a new coat of wax before you begin to use it again.
By taking proper care of your snowboard, you will greatly extend the life of the board and enjoy your snowboarding time even more. Snowboard wax is one of the best ways to ensure your board stays in the best operating condition at all times.
