Snowboarding is a winter sport which bares many comparisons to skateboarding, or surfing, although is performed on snow. The main idea of Snowboarding is to maintain your balance as you travel down a ski slope with both feet securely attached to the Snowboard via are set of bindings. There are many different types of snowboarding including Freestyle, Freeride, and alpine.

What are the different types of snowboarding?

Freeriding (also known as “all-mountain Snowboarding”), is simply the exploration of a mountain on your board. It’s very suitable for beginners, as all they have to do is ride down the piste, taking in the scenery. Freesyle is when you attempt ticks, including jumps, spins and grabs. You can use the natural terrain, or man made obstacles. Alpine is all about speed, and fast clean precision carving. Alpine boarders user boots with a hard plastic shell, and longer, stiffer boards than other styles.

What equipment do I need to snowboard?

If you go to a Ski/Snowboard rental or retail shop, they should be able to advise you about what equipment you will need, and obviously rent or sell it to you. Basic equipment will include:

Kick a ball, which ever foot you use will most likely need to be your back foot on the board.
Go to a staircase and walk up it, which foot did you use first, this should most likely be your back foot when standing on the snowboard.

Is snowboarding dangerous?

Like most sports, there is an inherent danger with Snowboarding. Although it’s impossible to remove all risks, taking some simple precautions can make the experience safer.

Take some lessons – If your new to snowboarding, don’t think you can just pick it up, lessons will make you learn quicker and in a safer manor
Wear Protection – Better be safe than sorry, wear as much protective clothing as possible. Helmets, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and impact shorts are all good examples.
Stay on slopes you feel comfortable on – Don’t jump on the black runs, when first learning stick to the nursery slopes, and move on to more difficult runs as you gain confidence.
Snowboard in groups – Don’t go out alone when first starting out, try to learn with a partner, or go out with a more seasoned boarder
Don’t push yourself to hard – If you get tired, take a rest, otherwise you risk causing an injury.

What age can you learn to snowboard?

Equipment is made for children as young as five, although most ski resorts will not teach children younger than seven years old. There is no definitive age, so it is up to the parent to evaluate if their child is ready to snowboard or not.

There are many styles of snowboards and sizes. If you are a beginner, my suggestion is to choose a shorter snowboard until you master your skills in order to be able to command a longer one.

The right length of a snowboard for you is decided by your height and weight; the right one for you would be reaching anywhere between your chest to your nose when measured against you. The weight plays its part as well in helping you choose the right board for you, for example, the heavier you are the longer the snowboard should measure.

Adult snowboards measure anywhere from 130 to 160 cm and those made for children are anywhere between 110 to 140 cm. Experienced snowboarders will usually choose longer snowboards in order to increase their speed on the slopes.

The width is yet another very important part that needs to be taken in consideration when choosing your snowboard; you should ensure that you toes and heels are not hanging out of the side of the board as that will make you loose control of the board when snowboarding.

The material of which the snowboard is made will ultimately say its word on the price tag; wood is usually the best choice as it is durable and stable but there are many other choices available out there to choose from and it you only you who will decide which one is best suited for you.

Before you invest in a snowboard try renting different types and experience, which one suits you best, you will find great differences between them from sizes to material. Designs too are available to match your personality and express yourself, the more colorful your snowboard the more visible you will be on the slopes when performing your stunts.

Snowboards just like surfboards are meant to be one like the rider therefore, take your time when picking yours, it will be your only companion when flying on the snowed slopes so, you need to be able to control it, maneuver it in order to take you and perform as you desire.

A List of Snowboarding Gear and Equipment for Beginners

Snowboard – Let’s start with the most obvious requirement in snowboard gear. Your choice of snowboard will determine the quality of performance you’ll expect from yourself and from the snowboard itself. Your choice will also determine the level of agility and speed you’ll enjoy when you’re snowboarding.

There are three primary types of snowboards. Freestyle snowboards are short and most suitable for novice snowboarders such as yourself not only because of their size but for its flexibility as well. You’ll be able to control freestyle snowboards more easily than other types of boards.

The second type is known as freeride snowboards. These are best for snowboarders who are one or a few levels beyond the novice stage but can in no way refer to themselves as experts…for the time being. The last type is called alpine snowboards. Whereas freestyle snowboards are known for its flexibility, alpine snowboards are known for its rigid build. They are great for players with highly advanced snowboarding skills and enjoy the thrills of going downhill in incredible speed. This is also the right type of board to use if you wish to make perfect turns and curves.

Snowboard Bindings – Although they may appear flimsy and useless, snowboard bindings in fact play a significant role in keeping snowboarders safe while practicing their favorite sport. There are several types of snowboard bindings for you to choose from: strapped, flow-ins, plated, step-ins, and those without base (baseless).

Snowboarding Boots – Another equally overlooked factor when it comes to increasing the level of safety and protection that a snowboarder enjoys while he’s making all sorts of turns and jumps in the slopes are snowboarding boots. Besides offering comfort and warmth to your feet, they also prevent this area – which includes the ankles – from physical injury, or at least reduce the risk of encountering it. Again, there are several types of snowboarding boots that you can choose from – hard boots, soft boots, and those that mix the features of both. When purchasing snowboarding boots, make sure that you purchase those which are durable and you feel comfortable wearing for long periods of time.

Snowboarding Outfit – Just like boots, the right snowboarding outfit will keep you safe and secure from physical harm. It will also keep you warm and lessen the risks of getting affected by hypothermia or frostbite. When shopping for snowboarding apparel, important factors to consider are comfort, quality, and durability or protection against all the natural elements that it will be sure to be exposed to!

Snowboarding Goggles – Lastly, contrary to popular belief, snowboarding goggles are not used for aesthetic purposes only. Rather, they are worn by snowboarders to improve their sense of sight. Second Hand Mountain Board – a Buyers Guide

Mountain boards are certainly hardy pieces of equipment. They have to be, given the job they do and the terrain they are ridden on. Mountain boarders perform fast, tight carves, big air jumps and very heavy landings on sometimes uneven ground. All of this means that modern mountain boards are designed to be pushed hard, and this is great news for second hand buyers as used mountain boards very rarely have any serious damage. Also, almost all superficial damage to mountain boards doesn’t affect performance in the same way that it might on a snowboard, therefore a beaten up mountain board probably rides just fine. Lastly, another benefit of mountain boards is that apart from the deck, the other individual pieces are easily and relatively cheaply replaced. Thus, any damage can be sorted out without too much effort or money.

Outlined here are some of the key points to look out for when inspecting a second hand board, just to get an indication of the standard of the board, and therefore how much it is worth.

Deck

Almost all mountain board decks have a wooden core. This gives a great mix of strength and flexibility and allows the board to be responsive yet forgiving. Older boards tend to have layered wood around the wooded core and these boards can suffer more from wear and tear than those more modern boards that use fibreglass as a layered surround. The completely wooden decks should be inspected all around for cracks and big chips, but most importantly water penetration. If any areas of the board look different in colour or the wood is softer, there is a chance that water may have penetrated through the protective layer. This is not a huge problem but left untreated this can cause the wood to swell and weaken the deck. Fibreglass boards are much less prone to this, but can still suffer from delamination, so still check all around.

As with almost all other boards and extreme sports equipment, it is vital that you ask for any stickers or grips to be removed from the board during inspection. It is so easy for imperfections or more serious damage to be hidden quickly using this trick, and it’s only when you get the board home and decide to re-decorate that you realise you’ve been sold a dog. Any serious seller will happily remove any additional coverings for you, after all if they are selling it, why do they care what it looks like?

Fixtures

Make sure you inspect all the wheels and tires on the board. First give them a spin to see that they run true and without resistance or noise. If the bearings have been damaged then the wheels will not spin as well and this could affect the speed and cornering of the mountain board. Some boards have alloy wheels and these are stronger than the standard plastic ones, but can still crack under large pressure so look carefully. Check the sidewalls of the tires for damage and take a look how much grip is left on the contact surface. The grip is very important on mountain boards and if it’s low you’ll be needing some new tires pronto.

Take a good look around the base of the board for damage. All used boards will have cosmetic scrapes and scratches, but you’re looking for any long fractures in either the deck or trucks that could be made worse by riding. On MBS boards pay special attention to the area around the central bearings on the base, as the hangers are plastic and prone to cracking

Some mountain boards have brakes on them so make sure these work before buying. Give the board a quick ride and just check that the mechanism works fine and if there are brake pads, do they need replacing?

If you’re buying bindings as well then make sure they are taken off the board to be inspected as they can sometimes have damage on their underside. Bindings are often subject to just as much strain as the deck so it’s worth your while giving them the once over. The ratchet mechanism is likely to begin malfunctioning over time, and this is a natural occurrence simply caused by general usage. However, if you don’t want be buying a new one straight away, strap in and out of the board a couple of times to check that they work smoothly and hold the feet in place tightly. Also, inspect the teeth on the binding straps as these will naturally wear down as well.

All in all, you can’t go too far wrong with a second hand mountain board and most cosmetic damage is easy and cheap to rectify.

The great news is you can get a good quality board for up to 70% off simply by going used. There are a number of things to keep in mind, however, when searching for a great used board.

First, consider where you’re going to buy your used snowboard. One of the most popular ways to buy a snowboard used is to use snowboard magazines because they often feature classified sections. Going online is another good option because it allows you to see pictures, make offers and view hundreds of available used snowboards. There are a number of good websites to use that allow you to bid in auctions for snowboards that may have only been used a few times. Ebay, for example, is a good place to find reliable sellers with snowboards and accessories.

Next, make sure you check the condition of any used snowboard you’re considering. This is very important to avoid buying a board that may be damaged or in poor shape. Remember, used snowboards are generally sold as-is. The first step is to check the board physically for any apparent damage. While the top lamination on the board may be repaired be sure there is no structural damage that ruins the integrity of the board. The bindings should also be removed if possible to check for damage. Look for dents or cracks on the bindings. Stickers and any stomp pads should also be removed to check for damage. It’s also very important to check the binding holes and the screws because these may become stripped, making it very difficult or even impossible to attach bindings to the board once you’ve purchased it.

Buying a used snowboard can be a great experience if you do it right. You can save a lot of money and get a board you love. Just remember to check the condition and get as much information about the board as possible before you agree to pay.
