Any good tips to avoid getting my gloves shredded by my snowboard edge?

Monday, December 19th, 2011

I had a very nice pair of Dakine gloves, but I managed to tear into the palm with the edge of my board after the third day. The lining is still intact, so they’re still useful, but I’m thinking about buying a new pair next year and don’t want to run into the same issue.

Essential Travel Tips For Canada’s Winter Olympics

Edit Article |

]]>

The Canada Winter Olympics in 2010 is promising to be quite an event. It seems every year that opening ceremonies get bigger, brighter and more spectacular; world records are broken in a more amazing fashion, and crowds get bigger. However, there is also heightened awareness of security every year, especially in the last decade. If you’re travelling to Canada’s Winter Olympics, we give you some of the inside info on travel insurance.

All About the Canada Winter Olympics

The Olympic Cauldron will be lit in Vancouver on February 12, 2010, marking the official start of the games. All of the regular Winter Olympic sports are on the agenda: ice hockey, alpine and cross-country skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding and figure and speed skating will be heavily attended. There are also a couple of relatively new sports included for this set of games, like Skeleton and Luge.

The Olympics in Vancouver are being held in one of the most picturesque locations ever seen in a host city. That location, however, is also causing a lot of speculation about whether conditions will be suitable for snow-based and other outdoor events. The Opening Ceremony, and traditionally high demand events like medal rounds in figure skating and ice hockey have been booked solid for months.

Potential Security Issues

The profile of the Winter Olympics makes it a target for potential terrorist or anarchist demonstrations, as well as those of other special interest groups. The torch relay, which began on the 30th of October last year (yes, that is a massive run!), has already been marred by minor demonstrations. However, these certainly were not on the scale of Beijing’s Olympics and the Tibet issue, which went off relatively undisturbed.

Do look out for demonstrations, which can quickly turn violent with the help of crowd mentality. There will be around 6,000 security personnel on hand in the Olympic vicinity to keep eventgoers safe. Don’t skimp on the travel insurance, however – an upgrade often costs less than you think it would, and is a sensible precaution in the current international climate.

Potential Logistical Issues

We already mentioned that the opening ceremony and high demand events have been booked solid for some time. If you have made any travel plans on the basis of attending these particular events, you may want to rethink them. Logistics-related travel insurance claims can only be paid if outside circumstances prevent you from fulfilling your hotel booking (or other bookings), not because of failure to plan ahead.

You’ll also want to make sure that your online travel insurance policy, or your car rental insurance policy, covers everybody who will be driving your rental car. After Manhattan, Vancouver has the highest population density in North America – so you can imagine the traffic around the Olympics time!

Recommended Level of Travel Insurance

Given the issues that travelers might encounter at the Vancouver Olympic Games, we’d recommend looking for the following in an online travel insurance policy:

Full medical travel insurance coverage – the risk of catching an illness in cold conditions, surrounded thousands of other people, is high
Logistical travel insurance coverage – the fact that accommodation is at a premium in and around the Games venues (and in the entire city!) means that you could be up for considerable extra costs if you have a logistical problem.

The highest level of travel insurance cover, which offers catastrophe cover, hijack benefit, search and rescue expenses, mugging benefit and resumption of trip benefits may not be needed here … however, it only costs a little extra and could add to your peace of mind.

Tips For Buying Ski And Snowboard Goggles

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 24, 2009 |

]]>

Some skiers and riders prefer sunglasses, but the majority seem to opt for goggles. Since my eyes tend to water profusely in cold wind, goggles are my eyewear of choice for all but a rare 70 degree spring day, where I’ll wear a pair of wrap around sunglasses. Protection from snow, sun, wind and foreign objects such as branches are a few reasons why I prefer goggles.

Here are some points to consider when shopping for goggles.

Lighting

Goggle lenses come in a variety of colors and those colors tend to help increase contrast based on light conditions. Is your favorite mountain usually sunny all day or does the sun quickly escape over the mountain peak giving flat light and making terrain indiscernible? Generally brightly colored lenses (red, pink, orange, yellow) tend to combat flat light conditions, making it easier to read the terrain when the light is low. Dark colored lenses (blue, grey, green) tend to filter out bright sunlight, so your eyes are more comfortable in sunny conditions. If you’re likely to ski or ride in a variety of light conditions, many goggle manufacturers make goggles with interchangeable lenses, so you can adjust your lens color to the conditions. Additional lenses are often sold separately.

No Fog & Good Fit

If you’re susceptible to foggy goggles, then you’ll want to consider goggles with lots of well-spaced vents and double lenses. Many lenses have an anti-fog finish applied to them by the manufacturer that deters fogging. The key to prevent fogging is to keep the inside of the lens free of any moisture whatsoever.

The goggles should fit snug to the face, which will help keep the elements out of your eyes and keep the inside of the lenses dry. The goggle frame is usually surrounded by foam to provide comfort against your face. Since many skiers and riders today are wearing helmets, it’s always good to verify that the goggles you’re considering will fit snuggly against your helmet at your forehead. I gap can make for an unpleasant day with the potential for frostbite. The goggle strap should be of sufficient length to encompass the helmet without making the goggles too tight on your face. Many helmets have a mechanism in the back to hold the goggle strap to the helmet.

If You Wear Glasses

There are a number of manufacturers who make over-the-glasses goggles (OTG), which enable skiers and riders with prescription eyeglasses the ability to wear corrective lenses underneath goggles. The goggles tend to be wider and deeper to accommodate the eyeglasses. Over-the-glasses goggles are a great option to maintain corrected vision, but shield your eyes from the elements at the same time.

Some Great Tips For Buying A Snowboard

Edit Article |

Posted: Jul 23, 2010 |

]]>

Buying a Snowboard is not as easy as it used to be. There are lots of different manufacturers and even more of different models. It can get very confusing process.

There are many different types of snowboards all for different uses. Here are the most common types of snowboards.

:Freeride
:P ark
:Rail
:Freestyle
:All mountain
:P owder

The snowboard has evolved from a simple design to many different styles and functions.

Purchasing a snowboard requires a few key questions to be answered, but guess what! We have the answersfor you right here. Your weight, height, foot size and riding style are the main factors that will define the appropriate stiffness, height, width and shape of the board you will buy.

So lets start with the first question.

Note down your answers so you can take them to the shop when you go to rent or buy a snowboard.

Your riding ability?
If you’re a beginner, first time, newbie, taking a lesson, snowboarded 1-3 times.
Intermediate- board 3-5 times a year, ride switch/fakie catch some air, turns no problem.
Advanced- buttering up those 270s on to boxes?
What type of riding style do you enjoy most?
Your desired riding style or the terrain you wish to ride will help determine the type of board you should rent or buy.
The three main categories of riding styles are.

1. All Mountain / Freeride style snowboarder utilizes the whole mountain. You enjoy carving, catching air, making turns in fresh powder or just cruising the slopes. If you fancy a bit of everything, then all mountain is where your style is.

2. Freestyle includes mostly trick riding. Jumps, spins, grabs, jibbing, rails, basically tearing it up. Technical freestyle riding is usually found in the parks or near the halfpipe. Freestyle boards can tend to range from very soft boards(ideal for buttering and jumps) to very stiff(ideal for pipe).

3. Carve/Alpine style combines speed and deep turns and utilizes everything the mountain has to offer. Alpine riders are continually transitioning from one turn to the next. It is all about high speed and hard carving. Next we move on to the question of your weight and height, this will help us pick the correct size of board.

Length
A good rule of thumb for all mountain is that the board should stand between your chin and your nose when set on its tail. For freestyle it should be a little shorted so you can make faster spins or put more pressure at the nose or tail of the board.

Width
Snowboard width is usually directly related to your foot size, you need a board wide enough so your heel and toes do not drag in the snow while turning.

Weight
A major factor in determining the correct board size also has to do with your weight. Riders who are heavy should look for boards that have a stiffer flex. Lighter riders will need a board with a softer flex. Also if you are heavy for your size then pick a longer board this will give you more surface area. Like wise if you are light for your size pick a shorter board. As the increased size will make it harder for you to control the extra surface area of the board.

CHOOSE YOUR SNOWBOARD

Brand/Model

There are multitudes of board manufactures, a good idea is when going into your local rental shop or ask the honest opinion of the brands. If you’re a newbie rider, go for one of the bigger brands, they tend to have better support and warranty.

Price
A new snowboard costs between U.S. $99.00 and $600.00.. Most Snowboard companies offer a selection of boards at different prices. The higher end boards are usually pro models or have a high technical built to them.

Graphics
Snowboards are a great way to get a message across. Most buyers choose a snowboard because of its graphical nature. This is a way to show the world your inner spirit, or not. Snowboards are quickly becoming works of art. Most Snowboard companies provide a large selection of designs and colors to choose from. Many manufacturers will not keep the same graphic for the model type board regardless of size. Graphics is a personal decision and should be considered only after the proper board characteristics have been decided. But most riders choose a board based on graphics rather than compatability.

TIME TO BUY?

Wait! Rent first
If you are beginner it is a good idea to rent. This will allow you to try a few different styles, models and brands of Snowboards. Ski Resorts offer snowboard rentals. Board, boots and bindings can all be rented at the same time. Many local sporting goods shops also offer snowboard rentals. This is helpful to do the day before so all proper adjustments can be made.

What about a used board
A used board is a great way to go if your budget is tight, Just make sure the condition of the board is good otherwise you could be wasting your money on a board that wont ride very well. Check the rails(metal edges)for any cracks or separation from the board it self. Top sheet for any cracks in the top of the board, it might be an indication to how hard to board has been ridden. Check the base for any large scores or any signs of separation from the rails. Some boards can be fixed if they’ve had a nasty hole put in them and they can be as good as new. But just check , you your common sense.

What about Last year’s models?
This is a good way to get a new board at a great price. Unless some new material is found in outer space, it is a safe bet that last years model will ride just about as good as this year’s. Summer time is a great time to start your search for last years model, (even though its the same calendar year). Most shops want to get rid of these boards so they can make room on their shelves for the new boards. EX demo boards. Every shop will have last year’s rentals or ex demo board lieing around somewhere. Ask them and you might find yourself a bargain.

Another growing aspect of snowboarding is photography. Yes! Snowboarding pictures are part of the sport’s culture. Taking snowboard riders at their best form has created a great interest for photographers. Now if you are newly venturing into this quest, there are three things that you should consider.

Extreme Weather Condition

You should know how to handle your camera in cold conditions. The primary problem that you will encounter with your camera is cold temperature. Batteries most often do not work in very cold conditions. It may also affect the camera’s shutter and your film.

To keep your camera and batteries warm when dealing with cold weather, keep them inside the parka and close to your body. Take them out only when you are prepared to shoot. However, it will be a problem if you have a huge camera. But if you are only taking pictures for souvenir, then a smaller camera will do. Meanwhile, if you are taking professional pictures, then get the best camera you can afford and try to keep it as warm as you can.

Timing and Sharp Focus

When taking a snowboarding picture, you want to capture the agility of the rider and the illusion of speed. To capture that moment, you need great timing and very sharp focus. You have to get yourself in the right position and be in the right location to have a clear visual of the subject and to have a good chance of photographing the moment. However, it will still be very difficult to take a shot without coordinating with the snowboarder. So instead of waiting for the right time, plan the right time.

Have an agreement with the snowboarder about simple signals, location, and the time you will need to set up for the winning shot. Once you have this arranged, agree on what kind of poses you are looking for. It is important to communicate to the subject what you want to capture on film. Before choosing a location, try to survey whether there is enough room for you to move and cover. Meanwhile, when giving signals, it is better to use verbal signs but if that is not possible try to have clear non-verbal signals that both you and the snowboarder will understand.

Pay also special attention on your camera. You have to be adept in using your camera to avoid losing a split second chance of shooting a great snowboarding photo. Run a few shots to check if everything is working. Most importantly check the film. You don’t want to put all your efforts in vain when you find out that your film has been exposed or you simply forgot to bring enough of them.

Film Exposure

Another terrible problem that you might encounter when taking pictures is film exposure. Most often than not, your camera is dealing with too much light. The snow is bright. The sky is bright. Both these elements appear nicely on your film but when you take a picture of your subject, he becomes a dark silhouette. To remedy this problem, you can use a light filter to control the light of the background as well as the subject. This will place light on where you want it to be. You should also you fill flash, this way you will avoid having dark silhouettes on your subject.

You may also encounter having bluish colored pictures especially when you are in a high altitude and surrounded with snow. A good solution to these problems is using a UV filter. It will lessen the blue light. This is very useful when you are taking snowboarding pictures at higher altitudes.

Considering these factors will help you come up with great snowboarding photos. Treat your camera as an extension of yourself by protecting it from cold, so that like your body it can function well. Plan the things that you need to do to capture the moment that you want. Lastly, invest on your camera. Add devices that will help you immortalize the perfect moment on your film.

Snowboard boxes are just another part that is combined into the snowboarding parks that permit the snowboarders to perform tricks and stunts and can make the day more fun and exciting for both the snowboarder and the fans who are watching. They’re similar to a rail system and provide another kind of platform that the snowboarder can jump onto, slide down and around and do flips and flops off.

Snowboard boxes are wider than the everyday rail system, but that just implies there is more of a surface for you to be hurt on in the event of an accident. Learn the rails before you go to the boxes and do not forget to practice safety methodologies and measures. That includes wearing a helmet at every point. While playing on the features that a board park offers to its riders, such as the rails, boxes and half pipe, there is a great likelihood that you could get hurt and shielding yourself by wearing a helmet and by taking other safety cares is mandatory.

Board boxes are often even wider than the actual board that you are riding. Some may only stand a foot off of the ground, while others can be taller. Always start out on the more basic and faster models of the boxes until you can get snug. Watch other boarders who’ve got a high comfort level. You can gain important information by watching them. You can definitely pick up some really handy tips and tricks by watching someone else. By even watching the bad stuff, you can discover what the most effective way to destroy is to keep you from getting hurt.

You can build your own box system at home so that you can practice. It doesn’t need to be a monster of a project, but simply a easy system that can help to get you started. Practice does make perfect and what simpler way to learn than at the comfort of your house. You’ll find instructions across the internet that may tell you step by step how to build your own personal snowboard box system with very few materials and at a low cost.

The rails and boxes can add a high level of fun and competition to your snowboarding action. Don’t be afraid to try them out, but always recall that they are dangerous and you need to always practice your safety techniques and wear your safety apparatus.

Buying a snowboard does involve a light amount of research and planning. Those who are serious about the board that they use on the slopes will need to make sure that they find out how to review your next snowboard. Below are some excellent tips that will surely be able to point shoppers in the right direction. Look them over and find out how simple it can be to plan and save on your next purchase.

Before you even get out there to start shopping, the right budget must be determined. Think about the amount of money that can be spent on this and be sure to include any and all accessories and extras. If a new helmet is needed, plan for that and make sure that there is plenty of money to cover everything. This will help to save time when you are ready to start shopping.

The snowboard world is full of different brands that many shoppers should know about. Of course the most popular brands are usually bought up first simply due to the fact that they are going to perform better. The lower set brands will save the rider money, but they are not going to be as good to use on the snow. Think twice about going too low on the price and get something high quality.

Once you have a couple of ideas about the board that you want, it will be time to start shopping. There are different shopping outlets that people can utilize in order to find the very best board. Look online and shop at reputable retailer that will offer a great board at a great price. There are also local sports shops that will be able to offer a great deal and a wider selection of boards.

The custom boards have become the most popular way to order a board. Boarders love the fact that they can get a board with their favorite colors and style on it. Every retailer is going to charge a different base fee and extra fees for the special additions. Think about the extras that you might like to have and then think about different upgrades. Special boots and brackets are always going to make the ride more fun.

Comparing and ensuring that the right deal is found is the very last step. It will be a good idea to look at each retailer and each board to see what is out there. Do not always go with the cheapest price, simply because you want to make sure that you get the right board.

Buying a new snow board is not as hard as you might think. To get on board with how to review your next snowboard to so easy if the shopper knows what they are looking for. Get started right now and find out how easy it can be to get a board that will speed down the slopes.

Camelback Ski Resort Rental Alternatives – Tips For Skiers on a Budget

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 27, 2009 |

]]>

Are you worried about facing the long rental lines at Camelback Ski Resort in the Poconos, PA? Shorten the time it takes to get on the lift by checking out some local Camelback ski rental alternatives. In many cases, you can find cheaper rental prices and nonexistent lines. Here are some local ski and snowboard rental options. Be sure to plan ahead, though – you don’t want to miss any slope time because you forgot your poles or boots.

Great prices on ski and snowboard rentals in the Poconos are available at Mike N Matt’s Snowboard Shop (Route 115, Blakeslee, PA). You’ll find a much wider selection of snowboard rentals than those available on Camelback and at better prices. Their location close to Camelback Ski Resort is a plus, as are the prices – ski rentals for $12 and snowboard rentals for $18. There’s a $150 refundable deposit required. If you’re looking for a place to purchase ski and snowboard gear, skis, boots, poles, and snowboards are available to buy, too.

Starting Gate Rentals and Repair (Bushkill, PA) also has a ski and snowboard rental area for adults and kids. If you hit this local shop, you’ll find all shapes of skis and comfortable Dalbello boots for a great day on the mountain. Staying at Camelback Ski Resort a few days or more? This shop offers longer-term rentals for reduced rates. Need a tune or repair? The repair shop features high tech ski and snowboard tuning using the Grind Rite Machine, which will help you achieve sharp edges and a smooth gliding base.

Pocono Ski Rentals Inc. (located at RR #1 Box 14, Tannersville, PA) is the closest option for non-site rentals; call the shop before heading over for rates and availability.

Of course, renting from Camelback Ski area itself is also an option. Camelback ski resort exclusively offers Salomon rental equipment for kids and adults. For all-day rental, you’ll pay $33 for adults and $30 for kids. For those who want more advanced performance, high-performance rentals are $40 per day. And get a jump on the lines with this new twist for 2009-2010 – skiers and snowboarders can rent items online and go directly to pick up, which can get you on the slope faster.

Come on over to experience Poconos skiing, scenery, and snowboarding for yourself. For all your Poconos PA skiing needs and tips on cheap hotels in the Poconos area, our Camelback Ski site is there to serve you.

Visit http://camelbackmountainskier.com to find the best lodging in the Poconos. We’re always looking for Camelback deals and budget bargains!

It will be helpful to implement regular cardiovascular exercises enjoy swimming or running to keep fit for snowboarding. Always choose comfortable and proper fitted clothes, boots and gear for snowboarding. If you borrow a snowboard kit from a friend to save money, it might not be a right fit and spoil the whole fun.
